Shapes vary by account type and over time; the decoder looks at each part (UPI ID, IFSC, 12-digit RRN, names) rather than fixed positions.

Questions

What is the 12-digit number in a UPI narration?

It is the RRN (retrieval reference number), also called the UPI transaction ID or UTR. Quote it when raising a dispute with the bank or matching a payment with a client.

What do P2M and P2A mean?

P2M is a payment to a merchant (shop, app, biller). P2A / P2P is a person-to-person transfer to an account or UPI ID.

How do I know which app was used?

From the UPI handle after the @: for example @okaxis, @okhdfcbank, @okicici and @oksbi are Google Pay handles; @ybl, @ibl and @axl are PhonePe; @paytm and @pt… are Paytm; @apl is Amazon Pay. Merchant handles often name the bank instead.

Why is the payee name cut off?

Banks truncate narrations to a fixed length (often 20–30 characters per field). The decoder shows what the bank printed; it does not look anything up online.
